So long story short, I've had to install something other than windows on my laptop.  I went with Ubuntu 12.10.  My laptop has an ATI Radeon HD 5850 card and intel i7 processor.  I think i downloaded and installed the drivers for the graphics card correctly, but WoW still runs like crap.

My linux skills have severely atrophied over the years and google searches are just pissing me off right now.  I'm trying to figure out if I installed correctly.  I've reset the graphics to low settings, but it's still choppy as shit.  I'll be cutting myself all night because I'm forced to ask this: WTF?

Kal,

I haven't tinkered with WINE in forever, but I poked around the internet to see if maybe I could find something pertinent to your issue. I am assuming that you are rendering in OpenGL, have you tried DirectX11 compatibility? Your mobile chipset supports it, and cursory WINE poking suggests that there is support for DirectX under WINE and Crossover.

Also, I found a step by step on setting up WoW under linux. Perhaps there is something useful in their procedure that differed from the one you tried.

Hit me up when I am in-game. I am curious to know if this was useful.

Thanks for the link.  I tried the recommendation of forcing it to run in 32 bit mode and that has improved things alot.

I wish that I had seen this post earlier.  I've heard the ATI drivers in Linux are bad.  There is an open source project that was better at one time, and may still be.
